From Aid to Trade: A New Era of U.S.-Africa Commercial Engagement

The United States has pivoted decisively from traditional aid to private sector-led commercial engagement, making trade missions more vital than ever. Since January 2025, U.S. embassies have supported over 60 transactions worth more than $25 billion, with U.S. exports to sub-Saharan Africa tracking roughly 23% above the previous year's pace. This momentum was on full display at the 17th U.S.-Africa Business Summit in Luanda (June 2025), which yielded over $2.5 billion in new deals and commitments, bringing together more than 2,700 public and private sector leaders, including 12 African Heads of State. Major agreements spanned energy, digital infrastructure, and agribusiness, including a $1.5 billion transmission line linking Angola and DRC, a $170 million digital infrastructure deal, and a $760 million hydropower project set to deliver energy to 30 million people.
